College Foundation buys plantation

President P. George Benson announced on Sept. 25 that the College would purchase the McLeod Plantation on James Island from the Historic Charleston Foundation. “McLeod Plantation is rich in historical, cultural and ecological significance, and presents the College of Charleston with a unique opportunity to save and preserve a cherished local landmark while enhancing academic and recreational offerings for its students,” Benson said. Revised policies good steps, wrong focus

 This week Jeri Cabot, the Dean of Students, made another step in the right direction, passing the amnesty policy regarding students who seek help during alcohol-related medical emergencies. This move comes on the heels of the recently revised alcohol and drug policies on campus, which provided more leniency for students and gave the school more discretion as to the manner and severity of punishment. Cougar Volleyball tops The Citadel, Wofford; falls to Furman

The Cougar volleyball team continued Southern Conference action last week with a 2-1 record, taking its record to 7-9, 3-1 in conference play. The Cougars started the week with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-14) win over cross-town rival The Citadel on Wednesday in front of 1,362, the third largest crowd in volleyball history. Full story

The H1N1 flu virus is still spreading across South Carolina, and universities across the state are taking action to protect students from the virus. The College is seeing students on a case-by-case basis, while spreading the word that good sleep and a healthy diet will keep the swine flu away.

Amnesty policy gives students second chance

The College passed an amendment to the current alcohol policy on Sept. 28 to encourage students to seek help during alcohol-related medical emergencies. The policy states that any student in need of medical care during an alcohol-related emergency may seek care without fear of being subjected to student disciplinary action.

Behind The Mask

Swine  flu’s rapid spread across the country has motivated many people to take precautions to protect themselves from becoming infected.  Last spring, Americans were strongly discouraged from traveling to Mexico. Recently, the school has installed hand sanitizers near most drinking fountains and has encouraged anyone feeling sick to go to health services and immediately put on a mask.

Meal To deal

A few weeks ago my roommate Tom and I successfully recreated Hominy Grill’s famous shrimp and grits. Satisfied internally but not mentally, we agreed it was just too easy. If you’re going to bounce around town, indulging in the best of foodstuff, only to recreate it in your own kitchen, you might as well have the guts to challenge yourself.

Cougar Sports Briefs

- Men’s and Women’s cross country competed in the Charlotte Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 3. The men finished fourth with Trevor Sprague leading the squad in a C of C record time of 25:42.2. The women finished seventh, paced by Erin Stoddard with a time of 18:35.
