Charleston Summer Preview

Staying in Charleston for summer classes can be a bit strange; most of your friends will have left campus until the coming Fall semester, and it can seem like there will be nothing to do or no one to hang out with. What many people don’t realize is how much Charleston has to offer during those hot summer months.

May:

05/14/09-05/29/09: Blues and BBQ Harbor Cruises features great food and live music. The tour departs from the Maritime Center, boards at 6:30 p.m. and cruises from 7p.m. - 9:30p.m. Tickets are $29.50 and you can buy them online at www.CharlestonHarborTours.com.

05/22/09: Charleston’s Piccolo Spoleto Festival begins! To find out about all of the specific dates going on within the festival visit their website at www. piccolospoleto.com or at www.spoletousa.org/2009. To save money on tickets head to the Gailliard Auditorium ticket kiosk.

05/22/09-05/31/09: There’s Afternoon Tea at St. Matthew’s Church on King Street from noon - 4p.m.. Ticket prices vary, depending on the menu, but inlcludes tea and wonderful food. All of the money from the ticket sales will be given to charity.

June:

06/01/09 - 06/07/09: Spoleto Festival is continuing until June 7th, so take advantage it while it lasts!

06/05/09 - 06/06/09: Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival is a free admission event where music, documentary films and art is showcased that celebrate the Gullah Geechee heritage. The Friday times are 3:00p.m.- 8:00p.m. and the Saturday times are noon - 8:00p.m. and is located at Laing MIddle School on Highway 17 North in Mount Pleasant.

06/11/09 - 06/25/09: Second shifts of the Blues and BBQ Harbor Cruises (see event details under May events above.)

06/13/09: Reggae Nights is a night filled with music, food and drinks at the James Island County Park. Tickets are $6 and the event begins at 8:30p.m.

06/26/09 - 06/28/09: Charleston Harbor Fest is a celebration of beautiful boats where you can explore the ships with a drink in hand or get more involved and volunteer. Access to the festival grounds is free. The locations vary depending on the specific festival event, and this information can be found at www.charlestonharborfest.org/.

July:
07/04/09
     There are so many events going on for the Fourth of July in Charleston. Just to name a few, there is the Festival in the Park, Fireworks at Patriot’s Point, Folly Beach Celebration and Independence Day at Middleton Place. The Festival in the  Park is from noon - dusk, followed by fireworks at dusk, and will be held at Old Santee Canal Park. Independence day at Middleton Place offers Independence Day reenactments and regular Middleton Place fees apply.


August:

Big John’s Tavern is hosting a pool tournament, so give it your best shot!

08/07/09:
Free wine tasting at Low Country Wine and Spirits on John’s Island

05/29/09- 08/14/09:
Moonlight Mixers at the fishing pier at Folly Beach is a night of music, drink and dancing on the water. Tickets cost $10 and the dates of each night it’s being held can be found at www.ccprc.com.
