Dear George Street Observer,
Many on campus feel that students in fraternities and sororities just get drunk all the time and don’t contribute to the well-being of the student body, the college or the surrounding area.
While there are a few bad apples in every group, Greek life students are in most part a force for good.
In the past week alone, through Derby Days, every sorority on campus and Sigma Chi coordinated to raise over $16,000 for the MUSC Children’s Hospital. Through this work, Greek life members have helped advance neo-natal care, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and the general health and well-being of countless children in the Charleston area.
This is not an isolated incident; Greek organizations conduct similar philanthropic work on a regular basis.
Before people condemn fraternity and sorority members as pastel-wearing alcoholics, they should examine the positive work these individuals do in the community.
Sincerely,
Thomas Kilpatrick
