On Sept. 8 President Obama delivered a back-to-school speech to students around the nation despite uproarious protests screeched from parents. Was it filled with mind-warping, socialist indoctrination and subliminal “vote for me in 2012” messages? Surprise, surprise, no, it was not.
The chief executive delivered a pretty routine speech that, quite frankly, any figurehead could have given.
“Stay in school, get good grades, and keep your chin up because education is a gift,” are all standard phrases said to schoolchildren, which Obama covered quite well.
And really, should the American public have expected anything more grandiose than these stock phrases, peppered with Obama’s own education background stories? No, we should not have.
All sorts of inane arguments were raised to prevent the sitting president from reaching out to students, from secret plotting to advance socialist ideology to liberal propoganda. And on top of all that, how outrageous for the government to use the taxpayers’ money for such selfish and manipulative purposes.
Never mind the fact other presidents have addressed students within schools. Never mind the fact that the majority of the population voted the president into office because his values lined up with theirs. Never mind the fact that feeling suspicious of our president’s education speech is utterly ridiculous.
The Republicans have become so entrenched in their drive to distance themselves from every endeavor President Obama embarks upon that they’ve become blind to a neutral idea or even a good one, staring them in the face.
With Obama’s constant need for compromise, the Republicans’ staunch opposition to every insignificant detail of the president’s plans is corroding legitimate legislation and ideals. By using scare tactics and scandalous language, the conservatives have been able to weasel out almost anything they want from the media and eventually the president himself.
The only problem is that though legislation and action continue to get closer and closer to a moderate end, nothing is happening. The presidency is beginning to stagnate because of the countless times Obama must come to his own rescue, buried underneath the right-wing agenda. They throw around accusations, Obama clarifies in a speech, and they throw around more accusations.
Only one thing can be said to these conservative mudslingers: it’s time. It’s time to get over it. It’s time to move on, and most of all it’s time to grow up.
Look, the fact is, President Obama is now the commander in chief, and his goals and values have considerable importance. Yes, the party should fight for its platform, but it should also be willing to give a little, to actually work with the president instead of always against him. Attempting to get the entire nation to picture a distorted “socialist” image of Obama, by questioning his motives for speaking to the young and the innocent, is no way to help run a government smoothly.
The two parties, to put it blatantly, should at least try to work in tandem so Congress can make progressive change.
