Softball loses three of five in USC Upstate Spartan Classic

The softball team lost three out of five games this past weekend at the USC Upstate Spartan Classic and fell to 4-9 overall for the season.

In the two-day tournament, the Cougars won two of three against University of Maryland Baltimore County but lost against Presbyterian and USC Upstate.

Kristie Shifflett and Shannon Howard each hit home runs in the first of three games against UMBC as the Cougars won 3-2. Terri Mesko got her first save of the year as she retired nine straight batters to end that game.

In the second game against UMBC, Howard struck out nine batters and only allowed two hits in the Cougars’ 2-1 win.

The team will head to Raleigh, N.C. on Friday, Feb. 27 for the N.C. State Wolfpack Challenge.
